Founder and Managing Partner
Dr Mikolaj Firlej is a co-founder and General Partner at Expeditions Fund, a venture capital fund investing in early-stage defence and dual-use companies building the future of security in Europe. The Fund backed companies such as Labrys (C4ISR), Disruptive Industries (threat intelligence), Comand AI (AI for defence), BotGuard (bot prevention), Nu Quantum (quantum networking), among others.
Over the last decade, Mikolaj has worked on autonomous weapon systems and the application of AI in defence and intelligence sectors. He is currently involved with the Surrey Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence. He earned his doctorate from the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, awarded for a thesis on the emerging regulatory standards over the use of AI-augmented and autonomous weapon systems in the US Department of Defense.
In the past Mikolaj worked for the Polish Government and helped to establish a new academic Centre at the University of Oxford focused on exploring policy and regulatory challenges of frontier technologies.
